Twitter Tips

The following are questions we have answered for our clients.

Search for People in Twitter

If you want to find specific people to follow in Twitter, the simplest way is to type the name in the Search box on the right hand panel.

The top 3 names that match your search will be shown at the top of your timeline (main panel) with a link to View all name search results.

The main panel will show current tweets that mention the search words you typed.

You can use the Search box to look for topics, or #tags as well. To search specifically for a person who is already on Twitter, you can go to the links at the top of the page and click Find People. The first tab here makes it easy to look up all the Twitter accounts with the name you type. It looks up the full name as well as the Twitter name, so you don’t need to know the person’s Twitter account name in advance.

Hashtags

Hashtags help collect tweets together in a category. Hashtags have the 'hash' symbol (#) preceding the tag. You can search on the hashtag.

Retweet

Sometimes you come across a Tweet that you would like to share. Twitter's retweet (RT) feature helps people quickly share information, whether it is interesting, informative, or just funny.

Just hover over a Tweet, click the retweet link, and the tweets are shared with all of your followers. If you then decide you dont want to retweet the original message, hover over the retweet and click undo.

You can recognise a retweet in your time line by the retweet icon next to the author's picture.

Direct Message

Tweets are available to public for all to see, but you can send private messages to your followers using Direct Messages.

If someone is following you, you can send a direct message from the web via the "message" link on the profile page. Choose the follower from the drop down list, type your message in the box and click the Send button.

Please note: you cannot send a direct message to a user who is not following you.
